Tree Planting part of the Queens Green Canopy project

22nd November

To help celebrate the ‘Queens Platinum Jubilee’, Swarthmore Residential Care Home received a Jubilee Tree donated from Bucks CC who are supporting the Queens Green Canopy (QGC).

We kindly received a ‘Sweet Chestnut’ sapling and took pleasure of planting this morning. One of our residents Kitty, who herself is 107 years old was chaperoned by our Activities team Ann Marie and Jeanette, Home Manager Claire and Paige who is on student placement. Peter our Maintenance & Facilities Co-ordinator took pleasure in placing the sapling in the ground. It was a very cold morning, so we made sure Kitty was wrapped up warm in her wheelchair, she thoroughly enjoyed the fresh air, views of the garden and being part of the event. She herself has received many birthday cards from the Queen to help celebrate, therefore, she was thrilled that she could join in part of another royal celebration.

We have planted the sapling in a beautiful spot amongst shrubs and spring bulbs, which will look amazing as it thrives. We have many other trees in our beautifully landscaped garden, so we all look forward to watching its progress.

Our residents often enjoy looking outside their windows in the winter months or sitting out on the patio during the warmer months where they will be able to admire a new addition to the garden as the Sweet Chestnut flourishes over the coming years.

Great consideration has been put into this project, so each sapling has more chance to thrive. The Climate Response team have ben able to match the soil type by grid reference depending on location. We are very grateful for the opportunity of being involved in such an important project which is all part of climate response to help sustainability in the world, as we all know trees play a big part here.
